My Statment and Evaluation.

‘A Sense of Place’ can mean different things to different people. To some it may be interpreted as a happy, safe or comfortable feeling. To some it may come across as a geographical place which they might have special connection to. To others it may not be a necessarily positive feeling. A sense of place can be considered as a feeling of fear, disappointment or loneliness, a zone or a place within an individual’s mind, which only she or he can relate to.
When a sense of place was introduced as a title, I immediately thought of somewhere, a geographical place which I have a personal connection to.  A place where memories surrounded me with a pleasant atmosphere; home. Home had always been somewhere that I had considered to be a sense of place.  It all depended on what I personally considered as home. I had many ideas on what I considered to be ‘home’, such as Wales, Caerphilly, The Brecon Beacons, Nelson, House or My car. Therefore I had decided to include most of these within my sketch book.
I still felt as though I had not discovered what I considered to be a ‘sense of place’. I needed to decide why these places made me feel so comfortable, why these places make me feel like I do. I realised then, that family and friends also had a huge impact in the reasoning of why I had chosen these places as  a sense of place. Trying to explore my ideas, I realised that ‘A sense of place’ did not necessarily need to be somewhere that I feel comfortable. Not wanting to lose my previous ideas, I wanted them to lead to something deeper and more meaningful. As I had finished my previous ideas on ‘friends’, one of the first ideas that came to me was the idea of social networks. After doing some research online, most social networks can be considered as something happy, but can also be seen as something of hatred, cyber bullying and harassment. Which then guided me to ‘bullying’ and then found the idea of ‘A sense of place’ being a lonely place where one is left with her or his thoughts.
I had decided to put all of these ideas in my sketch book, including photos that I had taken myself, images off of the internet and a few rough sketches that I did myself, of a few things that caught my eye. Throughout my sketch book I have used water colours and pens as I feel they represent the mood and the atmosphere that I am portraying with in my work. As a part of the ict aspect, I explored many techniques that helped throughout the process of the sketch book. I have used an application called ‘instagram’ that has let me edit pictures of my choice, through changing colours, highlighting or adding effects to certain areas.  As well as updating blogger throughout my course of the assignment, I have also used a bubbl.us which was very helpful as I could see all my ideas spread out and how I got to my final conclusion.
An artist was an important detail throughout my sketchbook. I wanted somebody to be inspired by, something for my ideas to reflect. I decided to use an artist called Haroshi. The Japanese artist creates three-dimensional sculptures out of old and used skateboards. Being an avid skateboarder, he believed that collecting and using his skateboards gave his art a connection to the outside world. He uses such techniques like stacking his skateboards and carving them into wooden mosaics. The reason I chose this artist, and the reason why he inspired me was because of his ‘screaming hand’ sculpture. He uses his hand positions, that give the sense of pain or frustration which helped give my work and sketches that drive it needed.
For my final piece I had decided to incorporate the ideas of bullying and a sense of place being a lonely place.  As I have enjoyed drawing hands, and my artist has inspired me, I therefore used hands within my final piece. I have used a canvas as I feel it helps the piece stand out. My idea is to have a pair of hands, palm upwards and to have feelings and words that resemble sadness, hatred and bullying.  I have also decided to paint it black and white as I feel though it would show that atmosphere that I am trying to portray.
Throughout the beginning of the assignment I had intended to use ‘A Sense of Place’ as something positive, and although I had shown some happy ideas in my sketch book, I have also shown that I have changed my mind about how I see ‘A sense of place’. I do believe that my decision to change my idea of ‘A sense of place’ was a good one as I think that it had lead me to think deeper about what could be considered as a sense of place and has ultimately led me to a better outcome. I believe that my use of two tone colours is the best option for my work as I think that it gives it a greater sense and atmosphere of bullying and sadness.
I have used ict thought-out the assignment and it has helped me a great deal. I have used the internet for research and to find images that would be appropriate for my work. I have also used blogger to update my work, which was useful as I could look back and see how far I have come.

So this is the end...

Not the finish product but almost there! Feeling good!

ICT update

I have had a few ideas of what to do as a final piece.
Not wanting to do something too difficult, because of the lack of time and equipment, I have decided to go for something rather subtle.
Enjoying painting, I want to paint on a canvas two hands, showing emotions of someone within a negative sense of place. I will be using my own photographs and editing them myself as I want to show that I'm trying to work independently.
CAN'T WAIT

Ict project update!

After drawing some, doing some research, I've figured out that I like to draw hands!
I think I'd like to use the artist I've used below as someone that has inspired me. Another reason why I've chosen to use hands and I think they can show many stories. Whether it be bad or good...

ICT Project update!

Decided now to follow a negative path for my project. My ideas change from, home, to friends, to social networking, to bullying. I want to explore that a sense of place ins't always considered to be a positive thing. I have been researching some artists...
the first one I found was really inspiring, the Japanese artist Haroshi recycles skateboards to create his art. He has created many different things, but I really liked his 'Screaming Hand'  --

I especially liked his use of colours.

What Is Education?

Further Education in Wales:
Nick Bennett - The Principle of Gower College Swansea.

Nick began the session by overlooking the Education and Training Welsh Government department for Education and Skills. This department provide advice and funding to many institutions including: Colleges, LEA's (6th forms), Adult Educational Institutions, Private Providers and the Volunteering Sector.
After extra researching the Further Education in Wales, It is fair to say that key skills are vital to our society. It can raise businesses and help individuals reach their potential. Nick then explained further what exactly further education does:
It can underpin social justice.
-Widen Access
-Second Chances
-Community Regeneration
-Fulfilment of Potential
-Cultural Awareness
-Civic Duty
-Financial Support

Also, it can support the economy by achieving employer engagement, work based learning, vocational qualifications, knowledge, business generation, workforce development, entrepreneurship. In-between the social justice and the support to the economy, we have the teaching and the learning, equal opportunities, innovation, the Welsh medium, Progression.
Further Education can make a society and economy. It is the key that can encourage individuals and students to become what the aspire to be. Further Education can offer many different qualifications that suit and support individuals for financial problems or second chances.
Nick then provided us with a few statistics;
730 learner went in to further education in 2009/10
95% of those were from Wales.
Further Education can offer up to 5000 different qualifications.
20% of further education students are full time, and then other 80% are part time.

What is Education?

Session with Graham Allen, The Environmental manager of the University.
Sustainable Education

Graham began his session by setting a research task; What is the definition of Sustainable Education, Brundtland 1987. After doing some research on this, I have found that their are many definitions and such of Sustainable Education, but the one that is mostly recognised from the Brundtland report.
As I was researching I found this; Our Common Future, Chapter 2: Towards Sustainable Development, where I found the quote:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:

the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
the idea of needs imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs."

Therefore, we must understand that the decisions that we make now, within Educational, Economic and Social prospects, will eventually have an affect on those in the future. There was a conference in Ontario back in 2007, to look back on the last 20 years of the affects of Sustainable Development in Canada since the publication of the 1987 Brudtland Report -  http://www.iisd.org/sd/#one

We then discussed that corporates responsibilities; Operations, Products or services. He mentioned that schools and other communities that are related in an educational aspect have a positive impact on societies.

ICT Project so far...

After the sudden change of topic, my chosen idea went from 'Identity' to 'A Sense of Place'
at first I thought that the new title was hard and confusing, but after a few sessions with Susie I started to realise and understand 'A Sense of Place'.
Having studied art for a few years at Alevel, I started to gain my own ideas as to where I'd like my ICT scrapbook to go.

First ideas from 'A Sense of Place' were; home, family, feeling comfortable...
So I've started my scrapbook at my home. - Wales.
I have started to develop my ideas and concentrate them down to a smaller idea.. e.g - Wales - Hometown/villages - my house - family & friends.

Knowing that A Sense of Place isn't always aimed at happy issues, I have a few negative ideas which I'd like my original ideas to develop in to...

What Is Education?

Steve Gullick - Session 3&4
23/1/12 & 30/1/12
I have decided to put both session number 3 and 4 together as they both had the same Guest Lecturer and had the same topic.

In these sessions we had a guest lecturer who was Steve Gullick. He is a Governor or Education and research, which was really interesting to get his opinions and views of the Governing body. Steve began with an introduction to the Governing body and what they do, what their aims and problems are. In his first seminar  he gave a deeper understanding of the topics and problems they discuss with in Governors meetings. He first explained the type of topics that they have to include and to discuss; reports, finance, head teachers, progress of the school and development plans. Many Governing bodies are full of Volunteers which is helpful in situations where there is a lot to discuss in such little time.

The Volunteers include;
Teachers,
Head Teachers,
Parents
Staff of the School
Residents
Or local representatives of a local business.
Obviously, they would all need a CRB certificate. Also, depending on the side of the school, the Governing body can include and range between 9 and 20 people. The Lecturer also explained that there could be a few problems with the types of people on the Governing body. There are debates and arguments that the there should only be experts on the team. It is hard to chose whether only experts should be on the body as I'm sure outside volunteers such as parents have just as much interest in the welfare of the school as any expert would, but on the other hand, do they have the full knowledge to be able to have a say in the future of the school?

When Steve came back to our fourth session, he mentioned School interviews, causal 'pop-in' from Governors to see how the school is doing and that every school needs a SENCO.
The Lecturer mentioned that SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordination Officer) is needed in each schools. Also, that 'Special needs' doesn't just mean students or learners that have difficulty learning. It can also include learners that have disabilities physically too. Such as people in temporary or permanent wheelchairs or crutches.

What Is Education?

Estyn - Dr Russell Grigg - Session 2

In our Second session of Guest Lecturers, we were introduced to a man called Russel Grigg that came to explain to us Estyn. Estyn inspects quality and standards in education and training producers in Wales. Estyn also concentrates at two main areas; First being, looking carefully at learners and their quality of experience and the second would be looking at outcomes and grades and any constitution where learning is happening.
He also pointed out that Estyn provide advice to the Welsh assembly Government  in quality and Standards and then look to promote and to spread good practice.

The Lecturer then mentioned the Three-Fold purposes, which is the three main aspects and reasons behind Estyn; informing, promoting and accountability. Which would be, explaining what the problem is or what can be done about it, then also going forward to help the changes and promoting changes in the educational constitution, and then looking at the overall outcome.

Estyn also provide school reports. Either in Institutions or Thematic - covering the whole of Wales. The Lecturer explained this as having three coggs. The biggest one being the Teachers, Parents and Governors, the middle one being the Learners and Students and the smallest being the Inspectors. I learnt that even though the inspectors give the results of the school or the Education Institution, the Teachers, Parents or Governors are the people, who ultimately have the overall administration of the school to change it and to make it a better learning experience.

Common Inspection Framework
- Outcomes
- Provision
- Management

What Is Education?

Guest Lecture: Session 1
Education: The Welsh Scene. 9/1/12

In our first session of our Guest Lecture sessions was very interesting. Basically giving us a rough educational background of Wales. Giving us useful facts such as the current Minister of Education in Wales is, Leighton Andrews and his predecessor is Jane Davidson. Being a fluent Welsh speaker, it surprised me to learn that according to our guest lecturer that only 20% of Primary Schools and 15% of Secondary schools use  Welsh as a main language, and also, that there was a deficiency of Welsh headteachers that have the NPQH qualification, which surprised me as I thought the Welsh Language in schools and in general was becoming more popular.

PISA 2006
The Lecturer then followed by telling us about the PISA scheme. I learnt that the PISA is a form of tests that is carried over several countries to compare their success of Education. We were told that the National Assembly of Wales said that the tests have done well, but there needs to be a few changes as the results were uneven. We then were taught to consider that Wales, like many other countries, don't have League Tables, but the Welsh Curriculum are aiming to improve their curriculum and other issues to better learning for pupils.

Also quickly mentioning the PLC's which is a community which brings teachers together to concentrate on a particular challenge. This could be a positive affect on the curriculum.

My New Bubbl.us! ready to start Mandy's project!

The reason why I chose Identity is because I wanted to aim for something a bit different other than the usual 'Wales' or something. I really loved doing art and alevel so I think Identity would be something worth exploring. I used these words because I wanted to grasp the many meanings of the word 'Identity'. This bubbl.us is what I think makes people who they are and how they became that way...
Loads more exploring to do I think!...

Christmas break...

ONE WEEK LEFT UNTIL WE BECOME CAPTIVE AGAIN...
Ah well, it was good while it lasted! The whole two days that I got to do placement was awesome! I loved working with the kids, helping them play and help them with their coats (in nursery) But I loved working with the older kids too, seeing the type of work they had and the different levels they could cope with. UNFORTUNATELY I got really sick with Tonsillitus and had to take the rest of the week off. Gutted. But at least I have a little experience under my belt!

In all honesty I haven't done much with myself these past couple of weeks! Preparing for Christmas I suppose but that's flown by again!! Nice seeing all my home friends though! It's safe to say that I am definitely missing the ol' Swansea gang! Definitely time for my to get my arse in to gear and start getting some work done! Starting with this blog! First things first, GLOGSTER! and then Pam's powerpoint...

  • Andy's research work
  • Andy's reading
  • Sian's reading
  • Type up Sian's notes on placement
  • Start porject for Mandy - Start with a bubble thingi!
  • And maybe decide what toy Im doing for caroline...
I'll need a miracle you say?...
I think so too! WISH ME LUCK!
